In May 1900, Xcalak town was founded by the Mexican Navy in order to establish a control post in the area. A port was built, becoming the first shipyard in the Mexican Caribbean. During the 1900s, it became an important population, highlighting its coconut production that reached up to 300 tons per month, it was a flourishing town with Anglo-Caribbean style wooden houses, with an estimated population of 1,800 inhabitants . In 1955 the population was hit by Hurricane Janet, which destroyed part of the population, with hurricane-force winds of more than 280 km/h, destroying the large coconut palm plantations and killing most of its inhabitants.

The few families that remained rebuilt their lives and the place was repopulated again with people from San Pedro and Sartenejas, Belize, among other places.

The first settlements in the region date from pre-Hispanic times.
You can still see some vestiges of buildings in the area.
The persistence and development of the fishing activity (lobster and scale) is of great importance for the community and part of the tourist presence of fans of trolling, fishing rod or string.

All year Xcalak waters offer different types of scales such as saw, horse mackerel, tuna, barracuda, grouper, snapper and tarpon. In the months of April to June, goldfish, marlin and sailfish abound.
All the new inhabitants found in fishing, an option to satisfy their needs, making xcalak come back as a fishing village. As a result of fishing, social organization mechanisms are established, in this way on October 25, 1959, the “Andrés Quintana Roo” Fisheries Production Cooperative Society was founded.
