Meaning
There is no evidence that allows us to know the name of the site in pre-Hispanic times, which is why the name of the Ejido where it is located was taken up, and which can be translated from Mayan as “place of red corn”.

Cultural importance It is the most important settlement detected to date in the Lakes Region, whose occupation began 300 years before our era (late Preclassic), with small hamlets around the permanent bodies of fresh water in the region.
Based on the research carried out to date, it is assumed that it was during the first years of the Early Classic (250 AD) when the urban layout that is preserved today and the construction of most of the structures that make up the core of the settlement were carried out, which includes around 70 hectares, where public architectural complexes with different civic functions are located religious and administrative.
Initially built under the stylistic patterns of Petén, the site continued its growth and development for 500 more years, in which it developed the architectural style that characterizes it and in which features of the Río Bec and Chenes styles intermingle, due to probably due to its strategic location.
Subsequently, it experienced a possible population decline and virtual abandonment, which caused the construction of public buildings to cease, although it is possible that this abandonment was not widespread throughout the area.
Finally, in the late Postclassic period (1200 -1450 AD), some civic and religious spaces were rehabilitated, which could indicate at least partial repopulation. The only two steles with hieroglyphic inscriptions found to date are illegible due to their deterioration, so it can only be assumed, for the moment, that Chacchoben was an important site linked to some larger regional capital, a situation that could well have changed in the time during which the site remained inhabited.
