Starting in 1940, the first settlers of Calderitas began to arrive, Yaaxcanab in Mayan, which means “place of green water”.

Its name is due to the small clay boilers found by the first settlers of the community, the same pieces that were used by the Mayans where they cooked utensils made of the same material. Many of these items are currently treated by some settlers and the National Institute of Archeology and History (INAH).

It is said that Calderitas could have been a settlement of the first Mayans. To date, vestiges of these pieces can still be found in different parts of Chetumal Bay.
In 1996, the Government of the State of Quintana Roo established the so-called “Manatí Sanctuary”, a protected area of 281,000 hectares that covers the Hondo River, Chetumal Bay and Laguna Guerrero.
