Bacalar Lagoon is one of the few places in the world where living stromatolites are found, one of the oldest signs of life on Earth.
These rock-beings were the ones that massively produced oxygen, their presence caused the atmosphere to mutate to the conditions we know today. Currently, they are only found in preserved places on the planet.
In Mexico we have some specimens; in Quintana Roo within the Bacalar, Xul-Ha and Chichankanab lagoons; in Laguna Alchichica, Puebla and in Cuatro Ciénegas blue pools located in Coahuila de Zaragoza.
Around the world we can find them on Andros Island in the Bahamas, on the Red Sea, in Lagoa Salgada, in areas of Rio de Janeiro, the Salar de Llamara in the northern part of Chile and in Shark Bay on the west coast of Australia, very close to the site where the oldest stromatolites were found in Warrawoona that are about 3.5 billion fossil years old.
