If you visit this important destination, take care of the environment and protect the stromatolites by avoiding stepping on or mistreating them.
Stromatolites are finely constructed bioconstructed mineral structures of diverse morphologies, originated by the production, capture and fixation of carbonate particles by bacteria capable of oxygenic photosynthesis in shallow waters, called cyanobacteria. They are the result of the activity of groups of cells in colonies forming sedimentary rocks.
The thickness of the sheets is less than a few millimeters, their shape is varied, it can be flat, hemispherical or columnar. On the surface, which is generally rough, porous and covered by filaments, carbon particles become trapped until cementation by crystal growth forms another layer. In this way the structure increases in size. Due to their rocky nature, stromatolites have a lot of potential to endure as a fossil.
Fossil stromatolites are found in all geological eras and one of the oldest evidence of life on Earth is the 3.5 billion year old stromatolitic structures found in Warrawoona, Australia.
These ancient living stones have been part of the oxygen-generating process on Earth and only exist in rare places on the planet. Stromatolites have managed to establish new ecosystems and can be considered the ancestors of reefs, as they allowed the development and pre-flowering of new species over millions of years.
In Mexico we have some specimens; in Quintana Roo within the lagoons of Bacalar, Xul-Ha and Chichankanab; in Laguna Alchichica, Puebla and in blue pools Cuatro Ciénegas located in Coahuila de Zaragoza.
