Emergency Services
Another option to attend to a Medical Emergency in our community is the Health Center located in the main square of Mahahual, where the Dome is. Coronado Street (next to the Matan Ka Hotel)
Open 365 days a year
Offers General Consultations
Hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Health Center has a Rescue Ambulance strategically located in the Fire Station, there is also a Paramedic 24 hours a day and a Transfer Ambulance is located in the health center. (This ambulance is driven by volunteer drivers from the town who are properly trained to be so).
The ambulances respond to calls for help received at 911 and attend to emergencies in Mahahual, Xcalak, La Costa, Rio Indio, Limones or any point near our town.
A Local Committee representing the Ministry of Health works directly to support emergency transfers, and also promotes courses for the community.
The Health Center is attended by a doctor from Monday to Friday and a doctor on weekends.
The only requirement to be attended is to bring your CURP; and due to the pandemic, a properly placed face mask.
If you have an Emergency situation in Mahahual or its neighboring area towards Xcalak to the south and Rio Indio to the north, the number you should dial is 911.
In this call you can explain your urgency to the person who answers your call and while they notify the relevant authorities to attend to your emergency, they will take your information and guide you on what to do.
After the call, be patient. The center is located in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, 142 km from Mahahual, and although those who receive the first call are the police patrols that we have here in town, you may feel that they take a long time. This is not the case; it will only take the time to travel from where they are at that moment to where you are. Follow the instructions they give you and stay calm.

COSTAMED is a private hospital located on Paseo del Puerto Avenue in the Nuevo Mahahual neighborhood, better known as Casitas; half a block from the tourist exit of the Costa Maya port.
The hospital is available to all local people and national and foreign tourists 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is staffed by a bilingual general doctor and two nurses (one covers the day shift and the other the night shift).
It has a reception and waiting room, a doctor's office, a pharmacy and of course the emergency area equipped to provide basic first aid.
If you have a medical emergency, you can go to COSTAMED and if you have Medical Expense Services with a national or international company, tell us about it when you enter so we can help you process the payment of our services through them.
The phone is: (983) 834-5976
*I hope I never need it but it's good to have it on hand
For weekend emergencies (Saturdays and Sundays on the boardwalk for tourists and locals) we have the support of a Volunteer Paramedic who uses a motorcycle known as a "first responder for First Aid."
*The motorcycle and all resources such as food, travel and lodging for the Volunteer Paramedic are paid for by the Committee.
